Sonic2.exe are a series of creepypasta .exe games created and uploaded to Gamejolt by NovaWare.
Background
The first installment, dated January 25th, 2014, serves as an unofficial sequel to the original Sonic.exe, centering around Sonic' mission to rescue his friend Tails. The narrative unfolds after Sonic's confrontation with Silver Sonic, during which he fails to secure all the necessary Chaos Emeralds to save Tails. Determined to rectify this, Sonic embarks on a solo journey towards South Island. However, his arch-nemesis, [[wikipedia:Doctor Eggman |Robotnik]], presents Sonic with a deal: if Sonic successfully gathers all the emeralds, Robotnik will open a gateway to a "lost paradise" enabling Sonic to save Tails. Conversely, failure would result in Robotnik keeping Tails captive and ending his life. Despite the dire consequences, Sonic chooses to run away, facing an impending Doomsday with an uncertain fate for both him and Tails.
Gameplay
The first game starts in Act I, with the player assuming control of Tails in a mysterious, dark world. Movement is facilitated by the AWSD keys, with jumping and sprinting executed through the X and shift keys, respectively. Tails navigates a world filled with platforms, some layered above others, and scattered rings, though their collection seemingly bears no significant impact. Upon completing Act I, a cutscene unfolds, depicting Tails' apparent demise as he falls into a pit of spikes.
The gameplay seamlessly transitions to a new level titled "Dawn of a New Day 0 Hours Remain." This level shares resemblances with the Green Hill Zone, set against a slightly dark plain blue background accompanied by an eerie chiptune. Sonic enters this terrain, encountering lifeless animals reminiscent of the original Sonic.exe game. As Sonic approaches Tails, a brief frame shows Tails opening his eyes, revealing black irises with red pupils, and blood flowing from both eyes. Static interrupts the scene, followed by a "No signal" screen. Subsequently, the game seemingly restarts with an introductory sequence, returning players to the game with access to another level, "Sunshine," now designated as Act 6.
This level lacks terrain textures and backgrounds, replaced by static covering the majority of the environment.[1] Players now mainly control Sonic in a void where various sounds play sequentially. Beginning with a radio-like buzzing sound, it intensifies into a woman's scream, accompanied by escalating white noise. This suspense builds to a jumpscare moment, revealing an image of Tails with gray eyes, showing only black pupils and bleeding from the eyes and ears, with hands covered in blood. This image is accompanied by the initial verse of Can You Feel The Sunshine? from Sonic R, albeit played with an echo effect. The image ends with a screamer, displaying the text: "There is no sunshine." The game concludes with the message: "But that doesn't mean this is the end." before abruptly closing.
Sunshine.exe
Sunshine.exe is the second chapter of the Sonic2.exe series.
The game presents with another story on what has left behind from the first game, while it plays along with Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, "Song of Healing". It presents Robotnik's diary, dated November 17-19, 1992, before transitioning to a scene featuring a worried Sonic with Tails.exe beside him. After Robotnik's diary ends, the gameplay begins, and players take on the role of Tails in Act I. During the game, Tails discovers the lifeless body of a clone of himself pierced by the spikes. Tails question how the clone managed to survive the fall and felt discomfort in the presence of deceased bodies of himself. While exploring a grey brick area, Tails stumbles upon a mirror, leading to a revelation of yet another clone of himself, causing his eyes to momentarily turn red.
As Tails continues through the grey brick wall area, he collects grey wings and navigates cliffs. Falling into the ravine triggers an image of Tails Doll, resulting in a startling shriek and sending Tails back to the beginning of the level (because of the fact he can't die). During his progress, Tails encounters Sonic, who warns him of an impending trap. Behind Tails, a clone of himself with red eyes appears, and the scene fades to black.
A message appears, emphasizing Tails' courage as a key to his survival and hinting at his apparent inability to die. However, an abrupt interruption takes place, with a message proclaiming "BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT I CAN'T KILL YOU!!!" accompanied by a loud shriek, along with a black screen displaying blood and static. Tails finds himself pursued by a "darkness" behind him. Falling behind triggers a screamer featuring Tails Doll along with the same shriek, abruptly ending the game. As Tails maneuvers through various obstacles and follows an empty path, the game is suddenly interrupted by Tails Doll, who claims that experimenting with "sunshine" is impossible, presents itself as a god, and expresses a desire to play with Tails in his "world". The game concludes at this point.
Insanity.exe
Insanity.exe, also known as Sonic2.exe: Part III, is the third chapter of the Sonic2.exe series.
The game delves into the aftermath of the preceding two games: Sonic enters into a deal with Robotnik to gather all 7 Chaos emeralds. Throughout the game, Tails endeavors to assist Sonic. However, Sonic's profound fear ultimately leads to his "death". The presentation concludes with the statement, "But the story hasn't ended there."
Insanity.exe begins with the player in control of Tails, navigating an aircraft through obstacles and avoiding walls functioning as platforms. Colliding with the receding "darkness" triggers a close-up image of Tails Doll, accompanied by the same scream from The Maze. Nevertheless, players can persevere and attempt again. If the player successfully advances, Tails encounters a malevolent clone named Tails.exe, and a brief close-up image featuring an altered Sonic X depiction of Tails flashes.
Sonic's perspective
After the presentation concludes, the game starts in Final Hope as Act 9, with the player assuming control of Sonic in an empty and monochromatic world. Movement is executed using the arrow keys, while jumping and sprinting are performed with the X and shift keys, respectively. At the game's onset, a message appears, expressing Sonic's familiarity with the surroundings and his determination to find an escape from this eerie place.
Throughout the world, the player encounters simple obstacles, such as platforms that collapse upon touch, leading to spikes. Soon, Robotnik makes an appearance, reminding Sonic that they are being pursued by Zalgo, who has taken control of Tails' body. It is revealed that the Tails they are facing is, in fact, a clone, while the real Tails remains elsewhere. As the game progresses, Sonic eventually falls from the terrain and is confronted by the malevolent version of Tails, blocking his path.
Continuing onward, the player encounters text that reads "You Can't Run," accompanied by visible static on the screen and images of the evil Tails, along with eerie laughter. Upon reaching Tails, contact is abruptly interrupted by a black screen, which then transitions to another screen resembling that of the BEN Drowned creepypasta. The screen features a blue dot with text declaring, "So, now you know my true identity. You're on my world now... I am the Hivemind..."
After the screen ends, the gameplay resumes with Sonic appearing in a cave-like level characterized by glitchy blocks and rings. Upon reaching the midway point, a sudden interruption occurs, cutting to a frame where Tails appears behind the player. Simultaneously, loud white noises accompany Tails' unsettling message:
“ | "Having fun, [DESKTOP NAME]? I hope so. I hope you enjoyed watching all those sealed fates. You know what was going to happen to them, although you did more than just watch. You took control of them. Led them to me. You are as responsible for their deaths as I am [DESKTOP NAME]." | ” |
Tails' perspective
Continuing the gameplay, the player eventually reaches a dead end with a large hole. If the player falls into this hole, the perspective shifts to another character, Tails. Tails spawns in the same bloodied terrain and reflects on the events, stating, "Eggman used my body to summon that devil." As Tails continues running, mysterious GameMaker texts manifest, including Sonic saying "cough W-What are you?" and an unnamed figure proclaiming: "I AM GOD" and "YOUR SOUL IS MINE."
Tails assumes Sonic is in danger and catches up to find both a clone of Tails and Sonic standing behind a wall of spikes. The player must make a choice on which figure to push through the spikes, trying to discern the identity of the unnamed figure. If the player chooses to push Tails towards the spikes, Sonic will express gratitude, saying, "I'm glad you got rid of that insolent fool, friend." Tails, puzzled by Sonic's altered demeanor, questions, "Hmm... I guess... why are you talking like that, Sonic?" To which Sonic responds nonchalantly, "Oh.. It's nothing..." and then suggests, "Let's just get out of this creepy place, shall we?" Tails agrees, saying, "Yeah, right." Following Tails' remark, a brief scene cuts in where Sonic's eyes open to reveal black eyes and red pupils, suggesting that Zalgo may be controlling Sonic's clone. An interruption occurs, displaying the image of Sonic.exe, and simultaneously, another image automatically opens in the browser, leading to the application closing. The browser then proceeds to install a copy of MY5TCrimson's version of Sonic.exe.
Alternative ending
If the player chooses to push Sonic through the spikes, a momentary freeze occurs, and a black screen reminiscent of the BEN Drowned creepypasta appears. The screen displays the text, "You shouldn't have done that. Don't like playing by the rules?" Followed by a zoom-in-and-out image of Sonic.exe grinning with the text "DIE NOW!" with a scream. After this interruption, the gameplay shifts to a style similar to that of Sunshine.exe. Now, the player controls both Tails and Sonic, who must run forward to escape the approaching darkness. Along the way, they must navigate through various obstacles, utilize springs for jumping, and collect gray rings. The level includes traps in the form of high walls, chasms, and collapsing platforms.
In the background, a flashing image of Sonic.exe appears with the text "I AM GOD" accompanied by the music used at the end of Nec1's version of the Suicide Mouse creepypasta.[2]
If either of the characters falls or gets caught up by the darkness, an image of Tails Doll, particularly the one used at the start of the gameplay, appears with a loud scream used in The Maze. Towards the very end, the playable characters will encounter Robotnik. A brief dialogue takes place, during which the .exe version of Tails, who is revealed to be Tails Doll inside, makes an appearance. Soon after, Sonic and Tails leave, leaving Robotnik alone with the doll. Robotnik ponders, "What can I do with this doll to get rid of Sonic? I'll just take it and see what I can do." The game concludes with a "THE END" screen, featuring a red gem of Tails Doll's glowing. A question mark then appears on the "THE END" text, and the game closes.
