Super Mario: The Lost Chapter was a creepypasta video game created and uploaded to GameJolt by Alexander Veibyn on July 9th, 2013. The game was infamously played by Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka, creator of SomethingAwful forum and Vinesauce.

Gameplay

The game begins with a warning screen and basic instructions, teaching the player to use the WASD keys to move the main character Mario, touch "save" blocks for checkpoints, interact with NPCs, and avoid losing HP to monsters. Afterward, the player loads into the opening screen, which becomes very important later on.

The player controls a fast-moving Mario in a peaceful tropical environment, navigating to collect coins while monitoring the HP bar in the top-left corner. After gathering a few coins and touching a strange blue star, a fake "Fetal Error 4673" error prompt pops up that tells the player to restart the application. However, the player does not actually need to restart, as they can simply close the window to return directly to the opening screen.

Suddenly, the opening screen cuts to a compressed image of BEN Drowned, followed by an awkward silence before normal gameplay resumes. Although the player can go back to collect coins, while a reversed rendition of the "Song of Healing" plays alongside an occasional creepy laugh. Eventually, Mario stumbles upon a complex mansion (or "Haunted Hut") that he must enter to progress.

Mansion

Mario must find his way out of the mansion!

Inside the mansion, the player must navigate multiple interconnected rooms to find the secret exit stairs while surviving several threats:

  • Pressing the wrong buttons scattered around the rooms can trigger instant-death traps or spawn health-draining entities like BEN Drowned.
  • A trail of coins lures the player into a trap where Jeff the Killer teleports Mario to a different area to encounter Toad, who warns him that going any further will lead to death.
  • In certain sections, Mario can fire projectiles to defend himself, which is showcased in a fast-paced boss fight where the player must shoot the White Face from IMSCARED as it constantly increases in speed.
  • Enemies like Ao Oni and mysterious, fast-moving hairy figures wander the halls, though harmless random screamers—like Jeff the Killer or a grinning "zalgofied" Mario—will also flash on the screen without hindering progress.

After successfully escaping the mansion, the player meets John Kramer (Jigsaw) from SAW, who forces them into a "Running Game" where they must run and jump over obstacles to escape White Face. Upon reaching the forest, the player must dodge rockets fired by Conker until they step on an "X" mark on the ground, which triggers a final BEN Drowned jumpscare before loading the end credits.
