Srerrt.exe is a Chinese screamer application released in 2005 and programmed in Easy Programming Language. Despite being highly similar to that of Chinese malware screamers, the creator and its website it was hosted on remains obscure as of now.
Payload
The application opens with two low-quality, compressed images of rural scenery featuring trees, houses, and plants. The user distinguishes between these images despite a total lack of text, instructions, or guiding information. Even upon closer observation, the images remain identical in lighting, composition, and color. After two seconds, the pictures change into a full-screen slideshow of screamer images and GIFs, such as:
- Crazy Ghost
- Sadako Yamamura from Ring (see Ring.exe)
- A pale woman's face with blinking red eyes and blood dripping down the corner of her mouth, as used in So Intimidating.
The payload has automated the application to re-run every 15 seconds, which has forced the user to use Task Manager to terminate the process. Because the software has integrated itself into the background processes, the screamer reappears immediately if the user attempts to run the executable again while the original instance is still active. This segment ensures the screamer remains a recurring threat until the user has terminated the underlying task completely.
