At one point, fans of the character would search her name on Yahoo Japan, only to be greeted with two graphic images:
- A finger with an open wound bleeding onto a paper towel.
- A corpse with its head gouged out and hand-written "die."[2]
Background
The original photo was hosted on an image sharing website called Ura Uploader[3] during the year 2012. The site lacked strict safety rules or content moderation, allowing users to post graphic content such as gore and other explicit images.
Links to the images hosted on Ura Uploader would end up appearing on search engines, leading internet trolls to abuse this loophole and manipulate search results. Users would frequently name their files after popular characters to trick people into clicking on them.
