The game loads a glitchy version of each level, and towards the end of each level, a goomba appears. When players stomp on the goomba, it transforms into a scary-looking girl image with glitches in front of the screen. The cloud then moves the player into the last level, where they must navigate to the end before touching a scary-looking man's face that suddenly appears on the screen. The eyes of the face then appear, the static changes, but after that, the face suddenly glitches and a loud screech plays.

Essence.exe is a screamer game based on the .exe creepypastas. It was created by drunkbearzz and can be found on his Itch.io site. The game features a version of Super Mario that is supposedly haunted, using sprites taken from the well-known game "Super Mario All-Stars: Super Mario Bros. & The Lost Levels."

Gameplay

During gameplay, the player controls Mario using arrow keys to move and jump, while the shift key is used to sprint. They spawn in a world that is entirely out-of-place, with flashing clouds alternating between white and purple, random blocks that provide either a red or green mushroom, and a slowed and reverberated rendition of the Super Mario Bros. theme playing in the background. The random block in question differs from its Mario series counterparts; the red mushroom increases the player's movements once eaten, while the green mushroom kills the player from poison. At certain points during gameplay, the game intermittently cuts into a blue screen of Unicode-like error text, which prevents the player's progress in the game. In this world, the player encounters Princess Peach standing on one of the yellow blocks. Once approached, Princess Peach falls down from her platform and dies. The player can progress through the level, which eventually leads to an unreachable platform, resulting in a dead-end.

In this case, the player is able to access another area through one of the pipes. Upon entering the pipe, the player spawns in an underground area but instead of solid ground, they fall into a void. However, it is possible to navigate through this area. The first obstacle the player encounters is a Goomba on top of a pile of green mushrooms that can kill the player on contact. After avoiding the Goomba, the player comes across a pipe that leads to the first world, but with a black background. Once again, the player encounters an unreachable platform, but it can be reached by timing a jump over the Goomba. On this platform, the player is confronted with glitching clouds. By selecting the cloud in the middle, the player can advance to the next level.

In the next level, the player would encounter green mushrooms and have to jump over them to progress. However, at a certain point, the player would come across a disturbing image of a man's face ripped apart, grinning without any pupils. Upon touching the face, it would begin to zoom in, eventually freezing on a frame of the face with pupils. Shortly after freezing, the game would abruptly close, ending the player's session. The game features other levels for players to explore; however, these levels are intentionally designed to be impossible to progress through.
