The Must Not Search Wiki (also known as the Words You Should Never Search wiki or MNS) is a Japanese website designed to catalog internet content based on shock value, including screamers, shock sites, and malicious malware.
History
Before the wiki existed, the "Words You Should Not Search" phenomenon began as a recurring thread topic on 2channel. These threads became so popular that the community realized they needed a place to archive the descriptions and "danger levels" of these terms to prevent people from accidentally viewing illegal or traumatic content. This phenomenon eventually gained international fame as the "Do Not Google" trend originating on YouTube.
The first organized lists were hosted on various free Japanese web services, such as Futaba Channel and Livedoor. These early versions were simple bulleted lists with brief warnings where legendary entries like Natsumi STEP! Lemon Party, and Kikia were first categorized. However, as the number of entries grew, these static pages became difficult to manage and navigate.
In July 2011, the community officially migrated to the Atwiki platform, which allowed for collaborative editing and a much more better categorization system. This is the version that still exists today, and the move allowed the community to implement the "Danger Level" (危険度) system, ranging from Level 1 (Safe/Curiosity) to Level 7 (Absolute Danger/Illegal).
During these years, the wiki expanded more topics beyond just shock sites to collectively document TV broadcast anomalies, creepy commercials, glitched video games, real-world biological diseases, forensic photos, creepypastas, and unsolved crimes. As of March 2026, the wiki has reached over 8 million views.
Website content
To join the wiki, users must set their own member name, follow the provided registration template exactly, and verify their account by clicking a link sent to their email address. Once these requirements are met, a final confirmation email is sent from @wiki to signify that an account is ready for use.
The site uses the standard Atwiki layout, with a "Web 2.0" or early 2010s look featuring a white background and a blue-colored banner. On the left side of the screen, a massive navigation menu contains links to various "Levels", alphabetical indexes, and community forums. The center of the screen displays the current page, where each entry typically includes the search term, its "Danger Level," and a brief description.
Danger Level
The most famous part of the wiki is how it categorizes content by "Danger Level" (危険度). These levels indicate the potential psychological damage or "gross-out" factor a search term might cause. The levels include:
- Level 1: Interesting or slightly creepy curiosities. (e.g Blank Room Soup, Yume Nikki)
- Level 2–3: Moderate shock, screamers, creepypastas (e.g., The Maze, malware).
- Level 4–6: Disturbing content, heavy gore, or very upsetting real-world incidents (e.g., Sad Satan).
- Level 7 (Must Not Search!!): Serious shock sites, illegal content, or the most traumatic images on the web (e.g., Encyclopedia Dramatica's Offended).
- Hall of Fame: Terms that are so "legendary" or extreme that they are kept in special high-tier categories. (e.g., BME Pain Olympics, Silk Road 3.1, ShockChan).
In every article, the wiki does not provide a direct link to the related term; instead, it allows users to read a "spoiler" or description so they can decide if they actually want to view the content.
