Internet Explorer.exe was a shock site game created and published by MattTheGameMaker on Game Jolt in 2015.

Gameplay

The low quality homepage

The game opens to an Internet Explorer homepage from 2015. The moment the player tries to type into the fake search bar, an image of a decomposing cow pops onto the screen, flanked by graphic depictions of self-harm. A harsh, clipping audio loop fills the speakers before abruptly cutting to dead silence. Ominous red text flashes: "SO..." followed instantly by: "I HEARD YOU LIKE RESEARCHING!" Before the prompt can be processed, a color-inverted image of a 9/11 jumper strobe-flashes across the monitor. The glass of the virtual browser screen fractures from within as a distorted humanoid arm lunges forward, shattering the display into static and abruptly cutting the game to black.

Internet Explorer 2.exe

Internet Explorer 2.exe serves as a sequel to Internet Explorer.exe, though its exact release date remains unknown.

The program initially displays a mock-up of a Microsoft Windows desktop with a crudely drawn landscape wallpaper and a single Internet Explorer icon. Clicking the browser opens a homepage featuring news articles and stock images carried over from the first installment.

Once a search query is entered, the results page loads to reveal a prompt demanding the user search for "yourself," accompanied by eerie, distorted images. Moments later, two red, rotating disks resembling eyes materialize on screen, accompanied by a piercing scream. The screen cuts to black briefly before flashing a gruesome image of a disfigured corpse, exposing the interior of the skull (similar to Cherrycake.org). Finally, the display cuts to black once more, flashing the player's screen name in bold red letters, before the program deletes itself and terminates.

Internet Explorer 2.exe serves as a sequel to Internet Explorer.exe, though its exact release date remains unknown.

The program initially displays a mock-up of a Microsoft Windows desktop. It presents a crudely drawn landscape as the wallpaper, featuring an Internet Explorer icon. Clicking the browser reveals a homepage with news articles and stock images seemingly carried over from the first game.

Following a similar style of shock site-related horror, the creator later released Hiatus.exe.

Upon opening the program, players are presented with a play button and text displayed against a black screen:

"Sorry for being on hiatus for quite a while... School has been getting in my way. Lots of stuff [sic] have been getting in my way."

Another line of text, located just above the play button, reads:

"This is a big game... With a loading screen!"

After clicking the play button, the screen transitions to a loading screen. Suddenly, a web browser unexpectedly opens and redirects the player to Anne.jpg. A short while later, another website pops up, linking the user to a Photobucket page belonging to a user named Hypercomp01, which features an image collection of the aftermath of road accidents.[1]

Nothing is going to hurt you.exe

A black screen message upon launch.

Nothing is going to hurt you.exe was another shock site game by MattTheGameMaker, released on an unknown date.

Upon launching the game, two red lines of text appear across a black screen, reading: "Shhh... Relax. Nothing is going to hurt ye'" sic. Almost instantly, a web browser forcibly opens and redirects the player to 2 Kids 1 Sandbox. After closing the window, the game immediately opens another instance featuring an edited image of Mr. Bean with removed eyes and blood splattered across his face, concluding with a final redirect to Anne.jpg.

Virusinstaller.exe

Virusinstaller.exe (also known as Trapped.exe) was considered the last shock site game created by TheMattGameMaker.

It begins with 2D scrolling gameplay. The player controls a blocky figure, barely visible beneath heavy screen static and surrounded by a low hum of white noise. Forced to walk forward with no option to turn back, they finally encounter a towering figure waiting in the gloom—none other than Matt.exe. As the character approaches, the screen fades to black. Out of the darkness, two glowing circles resembling eyes begin spinning and shaking in a violent, continuous loop. A line of text bleeds onto the screen: "You like to watch other people die in the 'game,' don't you?" A brief pause follows before a second line appears: "For me, it's the opposite." Before the player can react, a graphic image of a corpse flashes onto the screen. A few seconds later, large, rapidly shaking red text scrawls across the image ("IT'S TIME TO DIE") just before the game abruptly crashes to the desktop.

Trivia

  • Internet Explorer.exe famously inspired Google.exe, which was released a year later.
  • MattTheGameMaker created and released most of his games featuring gore and pornography, but a few years later, he deleted them (along with Internet Explorer and its sequel) out of remorse.
  • "Also, my games used to contain really disturbing real-life imagery stuff. Don't bring that stuff here, and if you have it uploaded on YouTube, delete it. The only things that come out of that are guilt, regret, and genuine trauma. I'm starting fresh, and better this time. (I do NOT encourage you to put real-life disturbing imagery in your games—don't EVER do this!)"
  • Due to a coding error in Internet Explorer 2.exe, an Apple logo suddenly flashes a split second after clicking the icon.
