GameJolt is a social community platform for video games, gamers, and content creators. It was founded in 2002 by David DeCarmine. It serves as a community hub for indie game developers, and other gamers alike, allowing developers to share their creations, receive feedback, and build a following. The platform supports a wide variety of games, ranging from browser-based to fully developed downloadable games. While GameJolt is well known for its diverse game library, it has also become a notable venue for screamers, much like other platforms such as Newgrounds and Winterrowd.com. Some examples include Google.exe, Sonic.exe, and I HATE YOU.exe.

Website content

The logo is positioned at the top of the page, the search bar is centrally located, and there is a "Get App" button, along with a "Login" and "Sign Up" button. The main page encourages the user to sign up if they are logged out or do not already have an account, including the authorization to sign in with Google. An animated, randomly selected image can also be seen in the background of the page. The key sections include "Store" (also known as games), "Site guidelines", "Creators", "Merch", "About", and "Help/FAQs".

The "Store" section allows users to browse games, hashtags, and categories, which are categorized under "Featured", "Hot", "Best", and "New". The "Site guidelines" outline the community rules and guidelines. The "Creators" page allows users to "Become a Game Jolt Creator". "Merch" redirects users to the official Redbubble page. The "About" section provides an overview of the site, detailing its purpose and features, and the "Help/FAQs" section addresses a wide range of frequently asked questions about the platform, providing answers to common queries.

Several screamers have gained notoriety on GameJolt for their effectiveness and shock value. For instance, "Smile.exe", a game that presents itself as a simple exploration game, but later shocks the player with sudden, disturbing imagery and loud noises. Another infamous example is Luna Game, which begins as a seemingly harmless game featuring My Little Pony characters, but quickly devolves into horror with unsettling visuals and audio. Below is a list of a few known screamers in the community:

Afraid is a screamer game developed by NexyusProductions (@NexyusNex) and published to Gamejolt on July 14, 2014. It is designed to start with the player controlling Luigi in a peaceful landscape and is tasked to search for Mario using the arrow keys to move and the enter key to jump. After a while, the game suddenly changes to an inverted color scheme, and a wall spawns behind the player, and their movement speed slows down. As the player progresses, they encounter the text "I can see someone," which leads them to continue further. Eventually, an image of Mario with no eyes and red pupils, grinning appears, along with the text "DON'T BE AFRAID" displayed at the bottom of the screen. This is accompanied by an extremely loud scream, which serves as a jump scare and an ending to the game.

I HATE YOU.exe was a horror game made by Theohmguy and published on Gamejolt on January 15, 2015. The game was later removed by Nintendo due to copyrighted content. The gameplay involved navigating through altered Mario-themed levels, encountering various eerie and unexpected elements, screamers, and disturbing cutscenes. The only playable level available is "Sunken Ghost Ship", the player is then tasked with running through a level filled with various enemies. Upon reaching the blue pipe, the player must run until they reach the next one, which has a mushroom edited to have a creepy face. Once the player makes contact with the mushroom, a fast slideshow of screamer faces is triggered, including but not limited to Regan MacNeil from The Exorcist, and Jeff The Killer. Afterward, the player respawns.

Pong.EXE is a screamer game created by RobBoberty in 2015. It was inspired by the classic 1970s video game Pong. The player must compete against a computer-controlled paddle on the right side of the screen, and the objective is to score 10 points before the computer wins. Each time a goal is scored, a series of strange events occur in the background, including flashing yellow squares, a brief appearance of a creepy clown accompanied by a laugh, the paddle palette doubling in size, and more. Once the player scores 10 points, a flurry of screamer pictures appears, such as a face-swapped image of a person and a kitten, and a man without eyes. An echoing scream accompanies these images as the game cuts to a black screen, followed by the credits. There is also a "Kid Mode" difficulty within the game. In this version, all screamers are replaced with cats.

Hotel Mario 6, also known as Hotel Mario 666 was a screamer game with a similar to Luna Game. As of 2017, the game was either deleted by its creator or taken down for an unknown reason. The only controls involve the arrow keys for moving and jumping; the movement speed is also notably slower and the game has crude graphics. Mario will come across 11 mushroom platforms and will encounter Peach after getting past them, dying will result in an image of Mario with an extremely loud scream, and then opens 2 text files and an image. Once the player gets close enough to Peach, static noise will interrupt the BGM. Touching Peach will result in a normal image of CDI-Peach from the Hotel Mario cutscenes for up to 10 seconds. This persists for another 9 seconds, when the image zooms in, showing Zalgofied Peach's eyes accompanied by the same scream from K-fee commercials. Later on, a visibly scared Goomba appears, getting close to it causing the game to crash, and trying to relaunch the application results in an image of CDI-Mario appearing.
