1990s

  • In 1990, NightMare, the first-ever screamer software was released on Amiga computers, loading an image of a skull every five minutes along with a loud scream; possibly the pioneer for screamer videos today.
  • On December 6, 1994, BMEZine was launched as a body modification website by Canadian writer and artist Shannon Larratt.

In mid-1996, Jumyou Ga Chijimaru was created by Yoshihisa "Kowloon" Kurosawa. In 1996, Rotten.com, the world's first shock site, launched. Additionally, insurgents in Chechnya filmed the murder of a Russian soldier which circulated with the file name chechclear.asf. In 1997, an early VHS version of the BME Pain Olympics was created. Also in 1997, the Goatse image appeared as one of 40 images of a man named Kirk Johnson shared among the internet's gay porn community. A hacker group called the "Hick crew" acquired the collection and used one of the images, Johnson's stretched anus, to prank unsuspecting internet users. A hacker and Hick associate named Merl1n registered the domain Goatse.cx and used it to distribute the image more widely. On September 12th, 1996, Ricardo Lopez recorded his final tape from his video diary, where he triggers the revolver in his head and collapses on the floor after sending a letter bomb to Icelandic singer Björk.

  • Adobe Flash was released in 1996, providing a platform for creating and sharing digital content.

In 1999, Frau1.exe was considered the first screamer game created as a trojan. Additionally in 1999, Albino Blacksheep was created initially as a personal platform for Steven Lerner's creations, but evolved into hosting user-generated content. Tekzone.net was also created as another platform for user-generated content on November 29, 1999, which later became the infamous TekZoned website.
