Bad Kensaku is an ongoing shock site trend which started in 2014. The Japanese word for Kensaku (検索) means search, lookup, or data retrieval in English.
Bad Kensaku format and style is similar to MAD. It features a montage of extremely graphic content, creepypastas, screamers, and horror material playing simultaneously in a split-screen format, while the song "Bad Apple!!" by Alstroemeria Records (featuring nomico) plays throughout the video. Every five to seven seconds, the compilation suddenly changes, and a new set of clips appears on the screen covered in mosaic blur, repeating this pattern until the song finishes. Other variations feature alternative layouts and multi-genre tracks while maintaining the core format, keeping the original "Bad Apple!!" song clearly audible. The trend also bears resemblance to Monkey Sugar and should not be confused with shock videos like MDPOPE.
On August 28, 2014, a user named いいいい uploaded a video to Nico Nico Douga titled "【Bad Apple!!】Bad Kensaku!!【検索してはいけない言葉】".[1] Over the following years, various spin-offs and derivative works inspired by Bad Kensaku began to circulate across the platform. Marking a decade of the Bad Kensaku trend, users from the Must Not Search wiki collaborated in 2024 to release an anniversary medley project titled 【合作】Bad Kensaku!!2024!!.[2][3]
In 2023, 【MAD】Weird Internet!!【The Weird Side of the Internet × Bad Apple!!】 was uploaded to YouTube by The Best YTPer, a video known for heavily featuring screamers and shock content. Another sequel titled Weird Internet 2024!! was quickly released a few months later, featuring minor differences and an increased number of screamers.
