desertofthereal.org is a shock site created by an unknown user in 2005. It is one of the longest-running active shock sites, alongside Removed.us. The website's name originated from the quote "Welcome to the Desert of the Real" from The Matrix.
Content
The page features a green background (#00B800) with small text reading "zomg, zizek~" and "lolz, internet", and displays an image of a man with a mustache ingesting feces from another man's anus. The website's meta description describes a poetic tribute to Percy Bysshe Shelley’s story about an ancient king named Ozymandias, which can be read below:
"The searing eyes of Ozymandias peer out from the shifting sands. His glowering brow casts aspersions out over the dunes."
History
The file was originally titled lawlz.jpg before being renamed to real.jpg in 2007. During that earlier period, the file dynamically loaded an animated GIF[1] of a cat watching two felines having sex on a television screen. The GIF could be interpreted as a website visitor's (represented by the cat) reaction to seeing the shock image of coprophagia on a computer screen.
Additionally, the site functioned as a mirror for desertofthereal.com, which hosted the same image and bears a similar history.
