Crazy Ghost (Japanese: ใ‚ฏใƒฌใ‚คใ‚ธใƒผใ‚ดใƒผใ‚นใƒˆ, kurejฤซ gลsuto), also known as Red-Eyed Woman (Japanese: ่ตค็›ฎๅฅณ, akame onna) is an image of a pale-faced, red-eyed woman that is used in many screamers. In China, the image is known as ไธ€ๅชๅฏๆ„›็š„ๅฅณ้ฌผๅฏต็‰ฉ (Pinyin: Yฤซ zhฤซ kฤ›'ร i de nวš guว chว’ngwรน, โ€œcute female ghost petโ€).

Origin and spread

Korea

Crazy Ghost appeared on myhome.hananet.net as early as January 2002. Upon opening the page, the website would open a pop-up window with the image. It displayed the following text on the main page:

Copy the code above and paste it on the [[wikipedia:Bulletin_board_system|bulletin board]] for the tag to be executed. If not, you will see something even more dreadful.

The code exploited HTML injection vulnerabilities to immediately refresh the page and redirect the sender and anyone viewing the thread to the screamer.

China

In October 2002, the image was published to two subpages of a private website belonging to a Chinese university student blog host, vip.6to23.com. Upon accessing the gui.htm page, the website immediately enters fullscreen mode, and open mm.htm as a popup. Upon opening, a dialog box that read ้Ÿณ้‡่ฐƒๅˆฐๆœ€ๅคงไบ†ๅ—?? ("Is the volume turned all the way up?") appeared.

After clicking the OK button, the page displayed the Crazy Ghost image, and played an audio file consisting of a female scream. The page opened another dialog box when the user attempted to leave the page, which read ๅ“Ÿ,ๆ€Žไนˆไฝ ็š„่ƒ†้‡่ฟ˜ๅฏไปฅๅ•Š ("Well, you've got a lot of nerve"). Unlike mm.htm, gui.htm had no image or sound file in its source code, and was likely designed to to redirect the user to mm.htm.[1]

Japan

In 2009, the image was reprinted on a Japanese website called ้ญ”ใ‚’็ฅ“ใ†้ƒจๅฑ‹ (ma o harau heya, "Room for Exorcising Demons") under the name ใ‚ฏใƒฌใ‚คใ‚ธใƒผใ‚ดใƒผใ‚นใƒˆ.[2] A moeified version of Crazy Ghost, called ใ‚ญใƒฃใƒผๅญใ•ใ‚“ (Kyฤko-san),[3] was posted on Futaba Channel.[4][5]
