Fun Quiz (Japanese: たのしいクイズ, Tanoshii Kuizu) is a Japanese mobile game developed by Nao Yanase in 2018.

Gameplay

The game presents itself as a normal quiz game, featuring an "Easy" difficulty to start. The Easy mode consists of 10 straightforward trivia questions. Upon losing all three hearts in Easy mode, the player is presented with a choice between two buttons, one to return to the game mode screen and the other to return to the title screen. However, upon completion of Easy mode, the player is given access to the "Normal" difficulty level which is where the game takes an unsettling turn.

In Normal mode, players are presented with a series of ordinary questions until they reach the fourth question. Upon reaching the fourth question, players are presented with a question consisting of corrupted text and answers. Unlike the previous three questions, players are unable to select any answer choices. After 20 seconds pass, the player will be taken to a new question screen where gibberish text overflows beyond the borders of the question box. Furthermore, the answer buttons will distort across the screen, accompanied by additional gibberish text, unsettling audio, and vibrations from the player's device.

The game then proceeds to the next "question", in which the question box is blank, but the answer choices are the opening lines from Yumeno Kyūsaku's detective novel Dogra Magra [ja].[1] The screen then transitions to an ominous black background, with an excerpt from the novel depicted in red text appearing accompanied by unsettling audio. Suddenly, an illustration of a girl from Irasutoya appears on the screen along with a voice clip saying 誰だ (dare da, "who is it").

Following this, the game returns to a more conventional format, featuring a press-the-button game. In this game, the player is challenged to accumulate 100 points by pressing the black button labelled 押[2] repeatedly. However, the game is designed to deceive the player into believing that the black button is the correct one to press. If the player presses the black button 22 times, they will be greeted with a close-up image of a Japanese doll, accompanied by a shriek and vibrations from the player's device. The actual way to score 100 points in the minigame is to press the ボタン (botan, "button") text rather than the black button. Once the player reaches 100 points, the game ends and the screen turns red with gibberish text. Pressing the first button brings the player to the title screen, which now has a red background.

Upon pressing the start button, the game directs the player to a series of timed riddles, unlike the previous game modes. If the player selects the wrong answer, the screen fills up with repeated red text that reads 間違えるな (machigaeru na, "don't make a mistake"), and then brings the player back to the red title screen. Upon completing the quiz, the player is brought to a thank you page, and has the option to either leave a review, solve more quizzes, or return to the title screen. If the player chooses to return to the title screen, it no longer has a red background.

What is the scary part of this story?

Five thugs belonging to the lowest ranks
of a mafia organization committed a
major failure on a certain important
mission. Later, the five were escorted to a
basement hidden in the organization's
headquarters and lined up in front of the
boss. After extinguishing his cigarette in an
ashtray, the boss stood up heavily from
his chair and loaded bullets into a handgun
for all five to see.

"Now, I will think of only one finger. The
person who guesses that finger first will be
spared, while the rest will be dealt with,"
said the boss. One thug hesitantly stuck out
his thumb. A hole appeared on his forehead.
Next, another one of the thugs held up a
finger that was not his thumb. He, too, was
taken care of. Two thugs simultaneously
held up different trembling fingers.
Two gunshots echoed in the basement.

The last one, convinced that he had survived,
joyfully held up his remaining finger high.
Thus, the five men were disposed of.

Q: Which finger did the last thug hold up?

Index finger
Middle finger
Little finger
Ring finger

Explanation:
The last thug raised his middle finger, which
resulted in his elimination as he displayed
a sign of disrespect towards the boss.

What is the scary part of this story?

Four young men were enjoying a hike up a
mountain.

On the way up, the clouds turned dark, and in
the blink of an eye, heavy rain poured
down and thunder rumbled. With no time to
descend, the four of them luckily took
shelter in a nearby mountain hut. There
was no one in the hut but the four of them.
As night fell, the thunderstorm showed no
sign of stopping, the temperature dropped,
and the four men, who had come to the
mountain wearing relatively light clothing,
sensed the danger of freezing to death if
they continued to sleep.

One of them came up with a good idea.
Each of them would sit at one corner of
the hut, and one member would tap another
member's shoulder. The member who was
tapped would then tap another member's
shoulder. They repeated this process to
prevent themselves from falling asleep. The
other three agreed, and they immediately
put the plan into action.

In this way, the four of them endured the
night and were able to safely descend under
clear skies.

What is the scary part of this story?

The head of state of a certain country was
resting his elbows on his desk, his head
in his hands. He was contemplating how to
bring an end to the war that had erupted with
another country, but lacking a decisive
solution, he was unable to give any
concrete orders.

Finally, the head of state picked up the
telephone on the desk and summoned the
prime minister to the room. The prime
minister arrived, and without any
formalities, the head of state went
straight to the point.

"I am troubled by how to bring an end to the
war with that country. I would like to hear
your thoughts." The prime minister answered
with a serious face,

"Let's plant mushrooms throughout the city."
Upon hearing this, the head of state smiled,
dismissed the prime minister, and
immediately set to work.

And thus, the war came to an end.

Notes

  1. The question "number" starts as ドグ ("Dogu"). Pressing any answer button on this screen causes the rest of the novel's title to fill in, until it reaches ドグラ/マグ ("Dogura/Magu"). The final kana (ラ, ra) appears once the screen turns black.
  2. Short for 押す, meaning "to push" or "to press".
  3. Japanese words can have the same reading but different meanings based on the kanji that they are composed of.
  4. A kanji reading refers to the pronunciation associated with a specific kanji character.
  5. Corrupted form of Heian period.
  6. The full and uncorrupted poem is 花の色は / うつりにけりな / いたづらに / わが身世にふる / ながめせしまに ("The flowers withered / Their color faded away / While meaninglessly / I spent my days in brooding / And the long rains were falling."). This translation originates from Donald Keene's Anthology of Japanese Literature.
  7. Corrupted form of Hyakunin Isshu (百人一首), a classical Japanese anthology of one hundred Japanese waka by one hundred poets.
  8. Corrupted form of Murasaki Shikibu (紫式部), the author of The Tale of Genji.
  9. Corrupted form of Ono no Komachi (小野小町), which is the correct answer, but the player is unable to select any answer choices.
  10. Corrupted form of Sei Shōnagon (清少納言), the author of The Pillow Book.
  11. This line ("Does it terrify you") does not appear until the screen turns black.
  12. An allusion to the urban legend Corner Game, known as Square (スクエア, sukuea) in Japan.
