Rorochan_1999 was the online alias of a 14-year-old Japanese girl from Ōmihachiman who committed suicide by jumping off her apartment balcony while live-streaming on the night of November 24, 2013. She was a live-streamer known for seeking attention and doing dangerous stunts, mainly standing on the edge of her roof and running across busy roads.[1]
Background
Rorochan_1999 first began live-streaming on the Japanese streaming sites FC2 and Niconico in 2012, and was also active on Twitter. Rorochan's videos mostly consisted of her singing, playing the piano, and other vlogs. She would often hide her face on her live-streams with what appearred to be a huge pink box with one poked hole to see out of, because she was shy and never wanted to reveal her face. However, she has accidentally slightly shown her face a few times while recording devices. When this would happen, Rorochan would drop the camera and deliriously ramble and apologize to her viewers, asking them to forget what they saw, despite the blurry camera barely showing her face, which reveals just how dangerously anti-social she was.[2] She would give her live-streams weird and explicit titles, like "Erotic Menhera Virgin, 3rd year of junior high school" (3rd year of junior high-school is roughly 7th or 8th grade). "Menhera" is a slang term in Asia that refers to people, mostly girls, who suffer from mental illness.[3] The titles of the live-streams attracted very malicious fans. Her profile picture on a few social media sites was Minky Momo, a female character who was run over by a truck.
Rorochan_1999 was also known for her weird behavior and attention-seeking, as well as doing dangerous stunts and putting herself in very risky situations like standing at the edge of her apartment roof and running across busy streets. Though some comments made by viewers on her live-streams encouraged her to stop, most comments supported this behavior and told her that she would become a legend if she hurt herself. In her final live-stream, Rorochan walked to the 13th-floor balcony of her apartment building, speaking to the camera and believing she will become a legend if she jumps off the balcony. There were a few viewers who encouraged her to do so and some who tried to make it stop. However, it was too late for her, and she quickly jumped off the roof while recording. Some viewers who allegedly saw the video claimed to have heard screams as she fell down. Some reports of her death note that she did not die immediately after the fall, but rather died in a hospital. The live-stream was completely lost, and only a GIF of her falling down was available, until September 14th, 2020, when the full live-stream with audio was found.
Many people aware of Rorochan's situation believe mental health problems, loneliness, and the putrid followers she attracted led to her suicide, not desire to become a legend. There is no evidence Rorochan was being bullied or neglected.[1] Rorochan's full name has been kept secret by her family for privacy, so it's possible she doesn't have an obituary or memorial.
In 2019, a band called Shinsei Kamattechan released a song titled "Ruru's Suicide Show on a Livestream", which is not based off the tragedy nor is related to Rorochan, though it did bring a lot of interest from the west, which aided the investigations into the life of Rorochan_1999.[4]
