Abantes

ABANTES is a ransomware on Microsoft Windows created by Chris and ElektroKill and first released on May 2018. ABANTES has not received wide distribution, even though it poses a significant threat to computer users.
The ransomware's payload includes a screen locker, a visual component, and a background encryption algorithm. Once installed, ABANTES replaces the desktop wallpaper image with the Clown Doll from Poltergeist, and icons on the computer are changed to a red square with the message "abantes was here" in black lettering. A program window named 'rules' is also opened, instructing the user not to kill any processes, edit MSCONFIG entries, or scan the OS with an antivirus. Proceeding with these actions leads to the operating system failing the next start-up processes, and instead displaying a terminal window stating that it will no longer function, alongside Discord tags from both of the creators: Chris#0538 and ElectroKill#8432. In the background, ABANTES uses a strong encryption algorithm to hold the victim's files hostage, including media files, databases, and documents.
