Early Life
Luka Magnotta was born Eric Clinton Kirk Newman[note 1][1][2] in Scarborough on July 24, 1982, where he was also raised.[3] He was born to Anna Yourkin and Donald Newman as one of the eldest of three kids.[3] Magnotta were born in the father's basement, including his brother Conrad and sister Melissa.[1] Magnotta's parents later bought a home in Bethany, Ontario, where they lived and raised their children there.[2][1]
His mother dropped out of high school at grade 9 and later met Magnotta's father when he was 10th grade. His father is a soap factory worker of Lever Brothers who has suffered from schizophrenia[3] since 1994.[1][2] Magnotta stated that his father is now working as an English teacher at a university with a Russian wife.[1] His mother is a writer who is obsessed with cleanliness and often wears surgical masks. Magnotta stated that both had health and drinking problems. Magnotta and his little brother were homeschooled by their mother while their father was at work for support, until the grandparents insisted they be enrolled in school. The mother sometimes would lock her children out of the car or out of the house and leaves their pet rabbits outside in the winter to freeze to death[3] as she "wanted total control over them."[1] Similarly, Magnotta had fears of his mother having "big red nails" and also described her tying his brother in a chair in his room "when he was bad."
His father was an abusive parent before the separation, but was never abusive to Magnotta. According to Magnotta, he stated that his father was quiet while drinking and loved playing video games with him. However, his mother rumored that her father threatened to kill her and would watch her with binoculars, which Magnotta did not want to believe. His father smoked and slept excessively. His father, at one point, was arrested and fired from his job for drinking at work. The family then had to moved into grandparent's home after their house was lost. Right after, his parents separated[3] when Magnotta was at age 9 or 10. His mother moved on with her children to a new apartment, along with her new abusive boyfriend from Toronto, Leo.[1]
Magnotta had no relationship with his brother Conrad. According to him, his brother was a "bad alcoholic" who was often arrested for drinking and driving, and he stood up for him when students teased him for looking "like a girl" at elementary, and being homophobic whenever he helped him in situation. Magnotta's sister Melissa later confirmed that Conrad had disclosed Magnotta's homosexuality "without his permission". From there, Magnotta became aware of having a relationship with his brother.
At age 16, Magnotta went to live with his grandmother, Phyllis,[3] who felt "worried about him hearing things, speaking loudly, and feeling scared" most of the time. The reason he is living with his grandmother is to escape from the psychological abuse of his mother's boyfriend. His grandmother took him to a psychiatrist in around 1999 after having concerns about him. Magnotta came to feel that his grandmother was a mother figure to him, as she had raised him correctly. She often dressed him in clothes, going everywhere with him, and slept with him when he was younger.
When asked if he had any sexual abuse in his childhood, Msgnotta was unsure about it. Magnotta allegedly admitted that he had engaged in inappropriate acts with his uncle, but he couldn't remember how old he was at the time. He once remembered his uncle being arrested for molesting boys once. He had also done sexual acts with his brother, where they played each other naked at age 5 or 6 years old. When they turned 12 or 13-years-old. He and his brother would show their micro-dicks and watch each other masturbate.
History of Education
Attending elementary & high school
Magnotta entered sixth grade at the age of ten or eleven, and had the ability to read and write at one point. He was heavily bullied by his classmates, who called him "infant" and laughed at his clothes (as Magnota's parents didn't have enough money to buy clothes for him in Valeo Village). Magnotta will try to play cute by giving them a piece of gum to stop them. But instead, the students were still bullying him. Even class monitors would dismiss him whenever he faced this situation. Although he had been bullied at school in the past, he somehow managed to connect with three other students with special needs. Initially, Magnotta was placed in special education classes when he first attended school due to his inability to practice math and reading. His mother also wanted to attend, but was dismissed because the school thought she was "intrustive."
After graduating from elementary school, I wanted to attend I.E. Weldon Secondary School, a high school located in Lindsay, Ontario.[3] Magnotta began to lose touch with his brother, and he was never teased by him or the other children again. However, Magnotta was completely unaware and tried to hide from the library at lunch, believing that everyone still hated him. As he got older, he stopped being afraid of communication and being shy. That happened when he started hanging out with students who were troublemakers. He had lower grades by the time he moved to regular schools and was in for most of the time. Sometimes, when he was not permitted by his mother to socialize with friends after school, Magnotta would skip school. He continued his education until he dropped out of grade 11, when he was around 17-years-old, due to his mental health. Magnotta said that he was not "feeling well mentally." I had poor concentration. I was feeling sick and hearing things. "
At the time, he became interested in Marilyn Monroe after discovering a book in the library about her that Magnotta believed they had so much in common. Magnotta also thought that cosmetic surgery as Monroe did so would help forget the past and incite people like him. He also wrote a book review about her as well as Ava Gardner and Sharon Stone, the actors of his favorite film, Basic Instinct.[4]
Enrolled at Tyark College and University of Toronto
Mr. Magnotta attended Thompson Internet College when he was about 19 years old, trying to finish his high school degree. He lost interest after about four months. In 2007, he enrolled in an academic bridging program at the University of Toronto but dropped out after two weeks because he couldn't "understand any of it." He attempted to enroll in a real estate agent training program in 2010, but was denied admission because he lacked a grade 12 equivalency, "couldn't do makeup classes," and "couldn't concentrate."
Timeline of Magnotta's carrer
Occupational carrer
Magnotta initially worked in a sandwich restaurant, but because of his complaints about making sandwiches, it only lasted 2 months. His mental illness made it difficult for him to work, including often staying up late, and pressure caused him to resign many times. Magnotta, then 18, worked in a grocery store for less than a month before being fired. He worked in a Great Canadian Bagel restaurant until he resigned again because he was too stressed to continue working. Magnotta also said that due to mental health issues, he “enjoyed benefits at the age of 18 or 19 and then started receiving payments from the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)”. Magnotta moved to several cities in his 20s, moved to New York City in 2008, and returned to Toronto in 2010.
Prostitution career
Webcams & Stripping
In his early twenties, Magnotta began to work in the sex trade. From that moment on, he believed he was bisexual. While living in public housing, Magnotta felt motivated and sometimes had "financial difficulties". He also had to steal food sometimes, but was ashamed of it. Magnotta had been brought to blackboards by his social worker because he "couldn't make ends meet". Magnotta started on webcams where he showed himself undressing in front of the camera, but didn't continue as much because there were too many "crazy people". He then started working as a stripper in the gay club "Remmington" in Toronto, but was initially afraid to go on stage. Magnotta also made a fellatio against the owner of the club and got drinks and a job in return. At the time, Magnotta didn't think he was good at it, and negatively likened himself to other strippers who were more muscular than him. He stopped working at the club after two months, because he was earning too much money and had to pay everyone there were in. Another stripper in his club suggested that he should start escorting because he felt uncomfortable with the drug addicts in the club, so he did and moved on.
Escorting & Success
As told by the stripper, Magnotta had been doing escorts privately with guys who he met at clubs, and had been going "five to six clients" per day from the start, continuing until the end of May 2012. At that time, he came into a connection with an escorting agent, who told Magnotta that he was his "best one." Magnotta stated that he did not feel he was abusive to him all the time and that they were even "friends" after all. Magnotta said he had appeared young, having a good stamina, and did all what the agent asked him to.
Magnotta made about "$1000 to $2000" per week and his agent would take a "20% cut of his earnings". He used his earnings as an escort to help his grandmother because she was living on a small pension. He gave her 100 dollars and once gave her 1000 dollars, but she did not want the money and returned it back to him; sometimes she would say that she did need the money and Magnotta would give it to her anyway. Besides his grandmother, Magnotta would also use his earnings to help his family. Magnotta once took his mother with him to the Bahamas in 2005, which is her first ever vacation. Rich clients would also even offer Magnotta some drugs and alcohol, but he often refused and accepted at some time. Over the course of having this much money, Magnotta felt dirty, took more of prescription pills, felt suicidal, and often had STDs. He also added that he was exposed to dangerous people, and sometimes raped (see below text). His clients took him to vacation so he could feel comfortable.
Magnotta was once raped and threatened by one of his clients. He sought out for help from activists and agencies for sex workers. They helped him with his clients who to call the police if he was raped. Later, The client was then arrested when he contacted the SVU. Magnotta also recalled getting a little help from a Paris police force after filing a complaint about a client who attacked and robbed him.
Relationship
Magnotta can't date, as he wasn't sure enough to have his first serious relationship after most of them were "just for sex". His first "serious" relationship was with a man named Ron, due to Magnotta's emotional connections. In the course of his first relationship, Ron would bring him flowers and often talk on the phone together ahead of time. His second relationship was Natter, who he met through his agent at a later date. Natter and Magnotta made calls together for escorting, but Natter had not come out of the closet at that time. Previously, his agent said that Ron had been using him, but although Ron may have loved him some, Magnotta admitted that he loved Ron more than his second relationship.
Later on, Magnotta had met an escort transgender woman named Barbie through Natter, when he was living at Toronto in 2006. Magnotta and Barbie have done sex together a few times, but he felt uncomfortable for most of the time as she has an addiction to cocaine and go to bars where he had stripped in the past. Barbie would laugh at him when he is unable to erect and would complain if he refused to have sex with her. Magnotta also wooed her to watch Basic Instinct 2, a sequel of his favorite film, where a man gets fatally stabbed with an icepick which later inspires his 2012 murder video 1 Lunatic 1 Icepick. The relationship lasted four months.
