Adapted from Virginia Shea's The Core Rules of Netiquette. Versions of this were common within the early internet, and most of these were unspoken (or spoken) rules:

  1. Remember the Human
    • Behind every username is a real person. Don’t say things online that you wouldn’t say face-to-face. Treat others with the same respect you’d want for yourself.
  2. Adhere to the Same Standards of Behavior Online as in Real Life
    • Be ethical. Be lawful. Just because you’re behind a screen doesn’t mean the rules or basic decency change.
  3. Know Where You Are in Cyberspace
    • Stay on-topic, don’t derail, lurk and learn the community before you post.
  4. Respect Other People’s Time and Bandwidth
    • Avoid flooding pages or talk with off-topic chatter.
  5. Make Yourself Look Good Online
    • Take pride in your posts. Be respectful, write clearly, and double-check your facts. What you write reflects on you.
  6. Share Expert Knowledge
    • If you know something helpful, share it! Screamer Wiki thrives on good info and helpful advice.
  7. Help Keep Flame Wars Under Control
    • Don’t escalate arguments or encourage drama. If things get heated, step back and help defuse the situation.
  8. Respect Other People’s Privacy
    • Never post someone else’s personal information without their consent.
  9. Don’t Abuse Your Power
    • If you have extra permissions (e.g., moderator or admin), use them responsibly and fairly.
  10. Be Forgiving of Other People’s Mistakes
    • Everyone slips up sometimes. If someone makes a mistake, correct them kindly and move on. Assume good faith.
