Look at Me Only (あたしだけをみて) is a Japanese surrealist stop-motion short film created by Japanese animator Tomoki Misato (known for My Little Goat) within the Musashino Art University in 2016. After its release, it became succesful in several animation festivals.

Summary

The film initially seems to depict a man being distracted by a cute guinea pig while on a date with a goth girl. The goth girl keeps insisting the man ignore the guinea pig and focus on her instead. Eventually, the guinea pig gets away from the man and he encounters a different girl, who he fantasizes about having a relationship with. Back at the table, the goth girl becomes more aggressive towards the guinea pig, which eventually bites her. She flings the guinea pig across the restaurant, seemingly killing it. The man rushes to help the guinea pig while the girl chases him into the men’s room. In the restroom, it is revealed that the “guinea pig” was actually a smartphone the whole time, and the relationship he fantasized about with the other girl he already had with the goth girl (as evidenced by photos of identical situations on his phone). He then leaves the bathroom and makes up with his girlfriend, and the two hug.

The first screamer appears at 2:19, where the goth girl, enraged, gets closer to the screen, roaring at it. In it, she gains a snake's head shape, eight fangs, flying hair, and a realistic red tongue, accompanied by a demonic slithering noise. The second screamer appears at 5:01, when the goth girl transforms into a giant snake with the goth girl's body and the head of the previous screamer, albeit with a bigger mouth and yellow eyes, accompanied by a raspy shriek.

Trivia

  • The film is mostly animated using wool or felt.
  • The film seems to be a metaphor for how people become distracted by smartphones and ignore those around them, as well as envy making people miss what they already have.
  • The bee mascot costume is used as the profile picture for Misato's YouTube account.
