Magnotta had been brought to blackboards by his social worker because he "couldn't make ends meet". Magnotta started on webcams where he showed himself undressing in front of the camera, but didn't continue as much because there were too many "crazy people".  He then started working as a stripper in the gay club "Remmington" in Toronto, but was initially afraid to go on stage. Magnotta also made a fellatio against the owner of the club and got drinks and a job in return. At the time, Magnotta didn't think he was good at it, and negatively likened himself to other strippers who were more muscular than him. He stopped working at the club after two months, because he was earning too much money and had to pay everyone there were in. Another stripper in the club suggested that he should start escorting because he felt uncomfortable with the drug addicts in the club, so he did and moved on.

[[1 Lunatic 1 Icepick]] was originally planned by Magnotta 6 months ago to make a "movie out of it," which is the matter of luring someone into his apartment and killing them. Before that, Magnotta advertised this movie to various sites before that happened a few days ago. On June 24, 2012, Magnotta posted a Craigslist advertisement stating that he was looking for a male actor for a "personal movie," which the Chinese international student Jun Lin later responded to. The two met in person at the Décarie Boulevard apartment on the evening of May 24, 2012, where the incident happened from that point on. Shortly after, Magnotta posted the "movie" to the site Bestgore.com, entitled "1 Lunatic, 1 Icepick". The video depicts Luka Magnotta stabbing Jun Lin with an "icepick" [note 1] several times before showing the close-up of his corpse. The rest of the video consists of Magnotta preforming necrophilia acts on the corpse, sodomizing the asshole with a wine bottle, bringing some black puppies to eat the flesh of the corpse, and stabbing it again. Things presented in the video, such as the Casablanca, the "icepick", the black puppy, and the wine bottle, were also found piled in the trash at the apartment. Magnotta also mailed most of his limbs to various headquarters in Canada, with his leg left inside the suitcase that was outside of the apartment, which was soon found by a janitor.

Prior to killing Jun Lin as a mess-up form of achieving fame, Magnotta had become known for torturing kittens and uploading them to various sites, including [[Python vs Kitten]] and [[bath Time lol]]. One of the most popular was the [[1 Boy 2 Kittens]] video, which showed Magnotta petting two kittens in a bed (similar to the bed in the [[Phyton vs. Kitten]] video) before putting them in plastic bags and vacuuming the air out of them .There were a few photos of Magnotta that circulated on the internet, such as one depicting Magnotta having sex with one of the kittens or the kittens in the freezer.
