Call of Duty (COD) is a popular first-person shooter video game franchise, published by Activision and created by Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Sledgehammer Games. The series includes games set in various locations such as the Cold War, outer space, and futuristic worlds, and is available on all major gaming platforms. Since the release of Call of Duty: World at War in 2008, the franchise has featured a game mode called "Nazi Zombies" (now just known as "Zombies") which appears after players complete the campaign. This game mode has become a staple of the franchise, appearing in every game since Advanced Warfare. In recent maps, developers have included secret "screamers" as hidden easter eggs.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Mob of the Dead

In the Call of Duty franchise, the DLC map "Mob of the Dead" features a hidden screamer that can startle players. By using a sniper rifle and heading to the roof of the prison where a plane is located, players can witness fireworks going off to the far left. If they zoom in with the sniper rifle while standing at the edge of the roof, a green face resembling the one from ВИD of Doom will suddenly appear on the screen, accompanied by a high-pitched scream. This screamer only happens once and is unique to the player who zoomed in. Another unintentional jumpscare can occur with the map's boss zombie "Brutus". Every few rounds, Brutus will spawn and lock down perks for players. He will give a hint of his arrival by the sound of a cell door closing and an ominous sound before he suddenly appears, screaming with light omitting him. If the player is close to one of his spawn points, Brutus may spawn and scream in front of them, particularly in solo play.

Origins

The 4th DLC map of Call of Duty Black Ops II, titled "Origins", features a jumpscare easter egg that is similar to the one found in "Mob of the Dead". If the player has a sniper rifle, heads to the Pack-A-Punch area, and zooms in on the church located on the right-hand side of the Pack-A-Punch machine, a damaged skull will suddenly appear and scream, filling the screen. The skull appears to be heavily damaged and has a reflection in one of its eyes. This screamer can still be accessed on the Call of Duty Black Ops III DLC "Zombies Chronicles".

Shadows of Evil

There is another jumpscare easter egg, similar to those found in the "Origins" and "Mob of the Dead" maps. To trigger this jumpscare, the player must have a sniper rifle and be near the boxing gym. They must then equip the sniper and zoom into the cargo ship, where a zombified version of Edward Richtofen, the main character from previous maps, will suddenly appear on the scope and emit a loud high-pitched scream.

Zetsubou No Shima

Zetsubou No Shima features a screamer that occurs randomly only during co-op play. The screamer involves the appearance of a teammate's clone, which can appear as either a stationary figure or a seemingly genuine player-controlled character with the same character model and Gamertag above them. If the real player gets too close to the clone, it will grab them, its eyes and mouth will turn bright red and it will let out a loud scream before exploding. This screamer has been known to scare players due to the convincing appearance of the clone, adding an element of surprise to the gameplay experience.

Call of Duty: WWII

General Jumpscares

Call of Duty: WWII is a first-person shooter video game released in 2017, and features a Nazi Zombies mode that relies heavily on jumpscares. In contrast to previous games in the franchise, which had jump scares as easter eggs, the mode in this game incorporates them frequently. The jumpscares in the game include zombies suddenly dropping down from above with a loud scare chord when the player is running through a hallway. In the game's base map "The Final Reich", players can activate their own jumpscare early on in the game. By looking down a manhole near one of the valves (before they're activated), a zombie will jump up along with a loud scare chord before disappearing.

Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII

In the fourth installment of the Black Ops saga, Treyarch bought back some screamers in the zombies game mode again.

Blood of the Dead

One such screamer can be activated in the game's "Blood of the Dead" base map, featuring the Shadowman character from Black Ops III. To trigger this jump scare, the player must equip a sniper rifle and head down the catwalk. Once off the catwalk, near the Swordfish weapon buy, the player must aim down the scope and look in a specific direction. If done correctly, the player's screen will suddenly be filled with a close-up image of the Shadowman's tentacled face, accompanied by a loud scream effect.

Classified

In the Black Ops pass exclusive map "Classified", players have the opportunity to encounter a parody jumpscare based on the "Last Gen Richtofen" meme. This meme originated from the low-quality model of the character Edward Richtofen in the Xbox 360/PS3 versions of Black Ops III. To activate the screamer, players must use a sniper rifle to zoom in on a flashing light outside "Groom Lake". This parody screamer utilizes a sting sound effect from the Black Ops campaign mission "U.S.D.D.", where protagonist Alex Mason hallucinates about shooting former President John F. Kennedy.

Dead of the Night

In the first DLC map of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies, "Dead of the Night", a unique screamer can be found that does not require a sniper rifle. In the "wine cellar" area, there is a bright blue glowing crystal on a table that can be interacted with. Upon interaction, the player will begin to teleport, similar to previous maps, to a different location. However, sometimes the teleportation will be interrupted by a screamer. During the teleportation, there is a chance that a portrait of a calm young woman will appear, but a few seconds later it will transform into a demonic version and fly at the camera while screaming.

Alpha Omega

In the third DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Nuketown returns with a new screamer easter egg that once again requires the use of a sniper rifle. To trigger this jumpscare, the player must go to the greenhouse and head to the top floor balcony, where they will need to stand near the stairs and scope around in the surrounding desert to find an A.D.A.M mannequin. Suddenly, a bloody skull with electricity emitting from it will fill the screen and scream for a second before fading away. Another screamer can occur if the player buys Galvaknuckles off the wall and punches the heads of every single one of the mannequins on the map. Once this is done, a mannequin will spawn next to the Pack-A-Punch machine. Punching the head of this mannequin will trigger a sudden jumpscare of a smiling mannequin's face with a scream.

Tag Der Toten

The final DLC of the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 features two unique jumpscares in its zombies game mode. The first jumpscare involves a Margwa creature from the Black Ops 3's Shadows of Evil map. To trigger it, the player must find a piece of paper with the message "Margwa isn't real, Margwa can't hurt you" written on it, located at the Forecastle. Upon finding it, a picture of a Margwa head screaming will suddenly appear, referencing the popular "X isn't real, x can't hurt you" meme. The second jumpscare can be found near the lighthouse where a Hermit man named Pablo is located. Normally, he can only be seen in silhouette, and players had expressed their curiosity about his appearance. Treyarch, the game's developer, responded by making him into a jumpscare. To trigger it, the player must use a sniper rifle and aim at the top of the lighthouse. If the player remains scoped when the light passes their scope, Pablo's screaming face will appear instead.

Call of Duty: WarZone (2019)

In October 2020, the popular free-to-play first-person shooter game Warzone introduced a limited-time mode called Zombie Royale as a part of its Halloween update. In this mode, players who died would respawn as zombies and had the opportunity to revive themselves by killing other players and collecting syringes. Along with this update, a random jumpscare was added to the game. Normally, players could find loot crates scattered around the map containing weapons, health kits, and other upgrades. During the Halloween event, if a player opened one of these crates, there was a chance they would trigger a loud and startling jumpscare accompanied by a flashing image of a portrait, ghost, or zombie that appeared on the screen for approximately three seconds before disappearing. This has since been removed following the end of the Halloween event and backlash from the community.

Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War (2020)

Jumpscares return in the latest installment of the Black Ops saga.

Die Maschine

In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, the first map "Die Maschine" features two jumpscare easter eggs, both involving an on-fire zombie, that were seemingly added in the first update to the game. The first jumpscare occurs when a player hits the Mystery Box and is lucky enough to receive a Ray Gun. Upon collecting the weapon, an inferno zombie will suddenly jump out of the box, scream at the player, and attack them. This jumpscare can also occur in two fake-outs, where the player spins the box and receives a Ray Gun, but as they go to collect the weapon, it is revealed to be a rabbit or nothing, and the inferno zombie jumps out at them. The second way of triggering the inferno zombie jumpscare is to complete the scorestreak easter egg by shooting floating zombies in the Dark Aether. If the player fails to shoot the final zombie in a specific time window on the final step before collecting their weapon, the Inferno Zombie will suddenly jump up, scream like the Mystery Box screamer, and attack the player.

Outbreak

In the season 2 update of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Treyarch introduced a new game mode called "Outbreak". This mode allows players to explore without any time or round limits, and they can also enter and exit buildings. Occasionally, when a player enters a building, they may encounter the Inferno Zombie from the Die Maschine map hiding behind a door or in a corner. Unlike in Die Maschine, the Inferno Zombie in Outbreak can deal damage to the player and his scream will attract nearby zombies to the player's location before disappearing. Despite being a rare occurrence, there is an in-game challenge to kill the Inferno Zombie before he spots the player, which can be achieved by peering through windows before entering buildings.
