[[File:America's Funniest Home Videos Logo.png|250px|right]]
'''[[wikipedia:America's Funniest Home Videos|America's Funniest Home Videos]]''' is a comedy television series based on Fun TV with Kato-chan and Ken-chan a Japanese variety show. The show featured clips of submitted homemade videos from viewers. It was originally hosted by the late stand-up comedian [[wikipedia:Bob Saget|Bob Saget]] from 1989 to 1997, until it was passed on to other people, such as [[wikipedia:Tom Beregon|Tom Beregon]], [[wikipedia:John Fugelsang|John Fugelsang]], and others.

In 2005, [[screamers]] started to appear on the show in the spotlight when it was hosted by Tom Bergeron. Ever since he departed from AFV in 2015, screamers have stopped appearing on the show (only one appeared during Alfonso Ribero's run).

Tom described [[screamers]] as "the invention of a new practical joke. For example, soon after the match was invented, some joker came up with the hotfoot. After the invention of the door, someone invented the bucket of water over the door. So, of course, it makes sense that after the invention of e-mail, someone came up with this."

The show featured reactions to numerous screamers, notably including [[The Maze]], [[K-fee commercials]] and [[What's Wrong?]]. Notably, Tom reacts to the aforementioned screamer which opens up a montage of reactions.

==Reactions==
Beginning a segment featuring reactions to What's Wrong, Tom is sent an email that contains the screamer. He tries to figure out what is wrong with the photo of the dining room. Of course, after about 30 seconds, a photo of an eyeless woman screaming pops up with a scream (done by Homer Simpson from the animated sitcom ''[[wikipedia:The Simpsons|The Simpsons]]''). After this, Tom responds to the screamer by saying "Oh, that must be what these people saw." as it cuts to a montage of people reacting to the screamer.

Another segment featured reactions to the K-fee auto commercial. One episode opens up with a girl being scared by one of the ads, causing her to fall out of her chair.

Scary Maze Game reactions are also featured on the show, however, it was usually an alternative version of the game that features the screamer from What's Wrong rather than [[Regan MacNeil]] from ''[[wikipedia:The Exorcist (film)|The Exorcist]]''.

In one episode, a woman reacts to [[Look Into the Spiral]] from afar camera angle. Once the screamer occurs, she runs away (towards the cameraman) screaming. Another reaction involves a little girl being scared by this screamer, claiming the image to be her mom.
'''What's Wrong With This Picture?''' or '''What's Wrong?''' or '''What's wrong with this image?''' is an infamous internet [[screamer]] created by Jaybill McCarthy, originally hosted on his personal website "Jaybill" in early 2002, (possibly late 2001).<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20020317063912/http://www.jaybill.com/article.php?articleID=49</ref> Many copies have since appeared on the internet, and is an example of an early e-mail chainletter prank.
==Content==
The animation disguises itself as a normal stock photo of a dining room; depicting an open window, table, chairs, paintings, and flowers. The viewer is then asked to find something wrong in it, however, there are no actual errors in the picture itself. After about 30 seconds the screen cuts to a grainy black and white closeup of an eyeless woman with a wide mouth putting her hands, which have their pinky fingers raised, around the sides of her face, accompanied by audio of Mrs. Mae Kilgore (from the 1957 film ''[[wikipedia:From Hell It Came|From Hell It Came]]'', played by [[wikipedia:Linda Watkins|Linda Watkins]]) screaming, albeit muffled, distorted and echoing. The animation repeats afterward,

The [[screamer]] face itself originates from gettyimages<ref>https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/photo/young-woman-screaming-close-up-royalty-free-image/BD4381-001</ref>, and was created by photographer 'Gandee Vasan' in 1998 as a stock photo inspired by "The Scream" by Edvard Munch. This stock image was also used (albeit heavily edited) for the cover of the 2001 film "Maniacts."

Jaybill himself is the one who doctored the stock photo into its now ''infamous'' form we know today, starting with this screamer and then the ones succeeding it.<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20020716184225/http://www.jaybill.com/article.php?articleID=57</ref>
==History==
<blockquote><u>NOTE</u>: This section is about the histories (and the rise) of WWWTPs.</blockquote>The Screamer gained traction rather quickly, with 5,000 page views an hour (6 million per month) shortly after it's release.<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20020609145230/http://jaybill.com:80/article.php?articleID=82</ref> Ironically, many viewers did not get the "joke" the first time... so Jaybill made an alternate version of the screamer titled the "observationally impaired" edition. This version added a bunch of text pointing out all the things it wasn't, then would warn the viewer the scare was coming with big arrows saying "this is it! this is what is wrong! the original image was just to deceive you!" This version is currently lost.<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20020802050810/http://www.jaybill.com/article.php?articleID=79</ref>

In February 2002 Funshack released their own [[screamer]], which featured a living room and the need to figure out what's wrong with it; after 10 seconds, a mouse (from Liquid Generation's [[Optical Illusion]]) appears with a shriek.<ref>http://web.archive.org/web/20070704220607/http://www.funshack.com/scary.html</ref> A Spanish version of the original was released in March 2002 by Jaca101 on the website Jaca101.com.<ref>web.archive.org/web/20020329184718oe_/jaca101.com/efectooptico.swf</ref> Another comparable version also exists, but there are no links to it, though ScreamerCentral uses the .swf file as a showcase video for “What's Wrong?”, which can be accessed here.<ref><nowiki>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXWOti9M3ek</nowiki></ref> [[Liquid Generation]] made a series of WWWTP in April 2002, only 3 animations were made altogether. from April to December, many copies began to appear, though most of them were deleted.

Weasel Circus also created their own version of WWWTP in 2003. In 2009, Amendia uploaded a [[YouTube]] video which has reached over 1.7 million views. WikiHow also used the [[screamer]] as a reference to “Internet Screamers”.<ref>WikiHow's "[https://www.wikihow.com/Recognize-an-Internet-%22Screamer%22-Video Recognize an Internet Screamer Video]"</ref> though many [[screamers]] like this began to appear, they aren’t well-known in the new era.
==Impact==
{{See Also|Reaction videos}}
The animation has been reuploaded on multiple websites including [[YouTube]], where it has gained many views. The screamer has also been featured on ''[[America's Funniest Home Videos]]'' (used there as a substitute screamer in place of Regan MacNeil in [[The Maze]]) numerous times. Screamers of this kind became more and more popular as they began to circulate on the Internet. A few more examples of this are [[What's wrong with this picture?]], [[Zoeken]], [[Forest-wmv]] and [[Basement Ghost]].

The screamer gained so much traction in it's day, that it actually managed to land a spot in the New York Times on April 22, 2002. The article hosts a small interview with Jaybill, who describes both his website and the screamer which was made "exclusively for the purpose of scaring my girlfriend''."''<ref>"[https://www.nytimes.com/2002/04/22/business/compressed-data-why-is-this-room-so-popular-shh-you-re-about-to-find-out.html?searchResultPosition=1]"</ref>

Interestingly enough, the very *first* screamer [[reaction video]] on the internet may have originated alongside this screamer. In mid-2002, Jaybill posted an article on his website in regards to a video sent to him from a subject reacting to this screamer. The subject/victim of the video is named "Jose."<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20020609151218/http://jaybill.com/article.php?articleID=94</ref>
[[wikipedia:The Nun (2018 film)|'''The Nun''']] is a Gothic supernatural horror film directed by Corin Hardy and written by [[wikipedia:Gary Dauberman|Gary Dauberman]], from a story by Dauberman and [[wikipedia:James Wan|James Wan]]. It is a spin-off of 2016's ''[[Wikipedia:The Conjuring 2|The Conjuring 2]]'' and ''[[Wikipedia:The Conjuring Universe|The Conjuring Universe]]'', It was released in September 2018.

In August 2018, an advertising campaign for the film began on [[YouTube]]. However, instead of using the film's trailer, users were instead tricked by a 5-second unskippable ad by The Nun (Valak).

The ads would lure the user into a false sense of security, by doing one of the following:
* A few seconds of a volume icon going up and down (much like [[wikipedia:macOS|macOS]]/[[wikipedia:iOS|iOS]]) for a few seconds, to trick the user into thinking it's an advert by Apple before The Nun appears with an incredibly loud scream. (This was the only one found, meaning the others are lost.)
* A fake buffering logo, to trick the user into thinking the ad is struggling to load, then The Nun (Valak) appears with a loud scream.
* Nothing about 5 seconds, then The Nun pops up along with a loud scream.
* A spinning ball, much like the "''Beach ball of death''" found on Apple Macs.
* Fades into a hall, then slowly moves down the room, a bell tolls, then The Nun appears.

After many users' complaints, YouTube pulled the ads from their site for containing "shocking content".

Other users claim a very similar ad is on Instagram & Snapchat, but rather than being one of the aforementioned ads, it's a flashing warning sign.

==Trivia==
'''Playstation 2 "Red Screen Of Death''' is a [[screamer]] video uploaded by ''lumpychessegames.'' on 2010.

The video starts with the ''[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_2 PlayStation 2]'' ''startup screen''. After the startup ends - once the camera zooms and "goes through" the cloud and towers - the RSOD (Red screen of Death) error appears, with its "Please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 format disc" notice. However, After 20 seconds: a picture of [[Regan MacNeil]] from [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Exorcist_(film) The Exorcist], appears with the same scream used from [[The Maze]].

==Trivia==
* In Death Screens and Various Other Errors, a video released on YouTube in 2012 by TheDash456 in which errors and death screens are discussed, there is a part in the first two minutes where Dash talks about the PS2's red screen. At 2:42, a picture Regan pops up with no sound other than Dash’s narration. In the comments, he explains that the source video for the RSOD included “that and a loud scream”. Not wanting a screamer in his video, he made an attempt to cut it out but was not entirety successful. This is more than likely the source video he used.
'''All 20 gamecube startups''' is a [[screamer]] video created and uploaded onto [[YouTube]] by a user ''SNJ1234'' in 2010.

According to this video, there are apparently 20 startups of the [[wikipedia:GameCube|Nintendo GameCube]] video game console instead of 3. The first three startups in the video are the normal startups that are added on every GameCube, but the next seventeen startups are nothing but the same startup but edited with different special effects that can be 'achieved' by pressing different buttons or switching the memory card.

All you have to do to achieve the 20th and last startup is to ''switch memory card "B" to "A", then back to "B"'', which is described in the video itself. However, when the last startup is about to end, the zombie from the [[K-fee commercials]] pops up with a scream. The video ends with the text, saying "''LOL"''.

'''Ghost Caught on Tape''', also known as '''Scary Rocking Chair''' is a [[screamer]] video uploaded by Steve Zuranski ([[YouTube]] user SZWORLD) on October 1, 2006. The video has gained over 77 million views as of June 2020. It was also hosted on [[winterrowd.com]].

The original video starts in a dark room with a giant white rocking chair in the middle - though other uploaded versions may display red and white text on a black background before this. There is a rocking horse behind the chair and various items scattered across the floor, including a water bottle. There is a Chevy commercial playing very quietly in the background, with a mom talking about the Little Mermaid as well. The camera footage is grainy and appears to be using a night-vision filter.

During the video, the blanket on the far right appears to move slightly. Towards the end, the rocking chair starts moving on its own - right after, a woman with [[Regan MacNeil]]'s face appears right in front of the rocking chair and crawls up to the camera with an echoing scream. The video ends with white text reading "www.szworld.net".

There is an alternate version where the screamer was replaced by the eyeless woman from [[What’s Wrong]].

== Background ==
The house is the original house that Steve and his family had lived in before they moved out - [[Little Boy Haunted by Demons]] was also filmed here. The heavily sped-up footage of the woman crawling up to the camera is Caroline Bryant, Steve's wife, and the alternate version's jumpscare image is in fact a moving picture of her face with black effects on it and slightly contrasted.

'''The Maze''', more commonly known as the '''Scary Maze Game''', was a Flash game created in October 2004. It was made by game developer [[Jeremy Winterrowd]] and was inspired by [[Steady Hand]].

This Flash prank disguises itself as a simple maze game in which the player has to utilize their mouse cursor to move a blue little dot through the maze. At the start screen, there is a note informing the player that the objective of the game is to pass through all 4 levels, and the player cannot touch the walls; however, there are only three levels in the game. The game also explains that it is best with the volume on, but, there is no sound in any part of the game except for the very secret level 4!

==Gameplay==
The first two levels are easy to complete. But as the third level is reached, the walls begin to shrink and have sharp turns, making it difficult to avoid touching them. This usually makes the player concentrate on the screen. Then, near the first curve to the left of the maze sharp part (The game also knows if the player is cheating; if they use right-click), an image of [[Regan MacNeil]] in her possessed state from the 1973 supernatural horror film ''[[wikipedia:The Exorcist (film)|The Exorcist]]'' pops up along with two loud screams, scaring the user.

The game was uploaded in 2005 on Jeremy's website, Winterrowd.com. The original version of the game had some slight differences in color, where orange/yellow with alternative text was used instead of turquoise. There is an alternative version of the game used in the comedy television series ''[[America's Funniest Home Videos]]'', where the face is replaced with the one from [[What's Wrong?]],<ref>youtu.be/qNW7Zzgapsg?t=30</ref> due to Warner Bros' copyright laws.
[[File:Reaction.png|thumb|Justice playing [[The Maze]], one of the famous screamers.|220x220px]]
Many people have posted videos of other people reacting to the game. The first [https://odysee.com/@screamreuploads:e/chad-pranks-his-stepson-justice:2 reaction video] on YouTube was uploaded by ''OUTLAW713'', on February 21, 2006.<ref>http://web.archive.org/web/20070306004420/https://youtube.com/watch?v=Bvv7MBZk_f4</ref> In the [[reaction video]], a young kid, ''Justice'', is playing the maze. Then, he gets surprised by the screamer. Shocked, he starts screaming and repeatedly hitting the computer screen. He then runs to his stepdad, ''Chad'', and starts crying. The original video and channel were terminated or taken down some time in 2009, however, some reuploads had over 27 million views.
The most viewed Maze Game video was uploaded by YouTube user nalts and has accumulated over 43 million views as of October 2017, However, the channel was terminated by [[YouTube]] moderators.
===Level 4===
[[File:Level4.jpg|thumb|One of the supposed "Level 4"s|205x205px]]
Even though only three levels exist in the game code, some videos circulated about a secret fourth level. On [[YouTube]], there are some fake videos of people supposedly successfully going through the 3rd level and finally entering the 4th level. The earliest "[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXWsd5_qlpw tutorial]" on how to get to the 4th level was uploaded by the YouTube user SoccerMomDebbie on October 19, 2008.

Other videos of the mysterious level continued to circulate. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NedCSuGt0eg This video], which has more than 1.25 million views as of 2019 showed the cursor make a shortcut (which in practice would have killed the player) in level 3 which unlocks a trigger to level 4 (pictured); once finishing the level, the game goes back to the main screen; text asks the viewer, "care to try a little bit faster this time?"

Outside of YouTube, users on Answers.com also about how to access the level; in response, users either replied a fake way or told the asker that level 4 does not exist.<ref>https://www.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_get_to_level_4_in_the_scary_maze_game</ref>

The fake level 4 was confirmed to have been made in Adobe Photoshop and played using the Microsoft Paint eraser.
There is also a game called [[Save Justin Bieber]], created by Jeremy Winterrowd himself, which replaces some parts of the game with a picture of Justin Bieber and the maze color is light purple instead of cyan blue.
After the end of 2005, [[screamers]] and [[shock sites]] gradually transitioned from sending chain-mails to reaction videos where people recorded themselves reacting to videos, animations, and more. This idea was intentionally made for people to record themselves getting scared or horrified by screamers and shock sites. These are very popular on many video-sharing sites, such as [[YouTube]]. In other words, screamers and shock sites are the first kick-starters to ever take off the trend. This article is about the history of how it happened.
==In [[screamers]]==
The first screamer topic of this trend was [[What's Wrong With This Picture?]], which dated back to 2002. The earliest one was recorded on December 28, 2002, featuring a blonde woman reacting to the screamer, trying to find out what was wrong with it. Shortly after, the image of an eyeless woman appears with a loud scream, scaring the girl away. This video was featured in one of the episodes of ''[[America's Funniest Home Videos]]''. The former host of AFV, Tom Bergeron, also reacted to the screamer from one of the episodes as well.<ref>youtube.com/watch?v=A1YlEjxm8iQ</ref> Besides this, a tons of screamers appeared on America's Funniest Home Videos when Bergeron hosted the show since 2005 and they would eventually fizzle out once Bergeron retired as host in 2015.
On April 1, 2007, [[Jeremy Winterrowd]] held a contest, "Winterrowd Prank Contest", where people recorded their reactions to one of his screamers and emailed them to Jeremy. The contest has its own channel, prankcontest, where people's submissions chosen by Jeremy are uploaded to the channel.<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20160409195708/https://www.youtube.com/user/prankcontest prankcontest] April 3, 2007 – via [[YouTube]]. The winner will receive a $100 cash prize for having their submission have the most votes.
Another video was shortly uploaded to YouTube, by a user known as Persephone Rose.<ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8PNylJ1Kmk 3 Orangutans 1 Blender REACTION VIDEO!!] - January 26, 2008 - via [[YouTube]]</ref> Persephone said in the video that his friend Ian (possibly Damonico) told him about the video and that he wrote it down in the paper for him to type in. At that time, no further information about the video has come to hand. It was until it was featured in one of Unnus Anus' videos, where they discuss "2 Girls 1 Cup".<ref name="KYM" /> Though Mark and Crank did not investigate further on the shock video, but it's brought up in the discussion again out of the blue.

==Reactions==

Scary Maze Game reactions are also featured on the show, however, it was an alternative version of the game that features the screamer from What's Wrong rather than [[Regan MacNeil]] from ''[[wikipedia:The Exorcist (film)|The Exorcist]]'' (likely due to Warner Bros' copyright laws).

In one episode, a woman reacts to [[Look Into the Spiral]] from afar camera angle. Once the screamer occurs, she runs away (towards the cameraman) screaming. Another reaction involves a little girl being scared by this screamer, claiming the image to be her mom.
