The show features clips of submitted homemade [[videos]] from viewers. It was originally hosted by the late stand-up comedian [[wikipedia:Bob Saget|Bob Saget]] from 1989 to 1997, until it was passed on to other people, such as [[wikipedia:Tom Bergeron|Tom Bergeron]], [[wikipedia:John Fugelsang|John Fugelsang]], and others.

In 2005, [[screamers]] started to appear on the show in the spotlight when it was hosted by Tom Bergeron. Ever since he departed from AFV in 2015, screamers have stopped appearing on the show (only one entry appeared during Alfonso Ribeiro's run).

Tom described screamers as "the invention of a new practical joke. For example, soon after the match was invented, some jokers came up with the hotfoot. After the invention of the door, someone invented a bucket of water over the door. So, of course, it makes sense that after the invention of e-mail, someone came up with this."

The show featured reactions to numerous screamers, notably including [[The Maze]], [[K-fee commercials]], and [[What's Wrong?]]. Notably, Tom reacts to the aforementioned screamer which opens up a montage of reactions.

==Reactions==
Beginning a segment featuring reactions to What's Wrong, Tom is sent an email that contains the screamer. He tries to figure out what is wrong with the photo of the dining room. Of course, after about 30 seconds, a photo of an eyeless woman screaming pops up with a scream (done by Linda Watkins, sourced from From Hell It Came (1957).) After this, Tom responds to the screamer by saying "Oh, that must be what these people saw." as it cuts to a montage of people reacting to the screamer.

Another segment featured reactions to the K-fee auto commercial. One episode opens up with a girl being scared by one of the ads, causing her to fall out of her chair.

Scary Maze Game reactions are also featured on the show, however, it was usually an alternative version of the game that features the screamer from What's Wrong rather than [[Regan MacNeil]] from ''[[wikipedia:The Exorcist (film)|The Exorcist]]''.

In one episode, a woman reacts to [[Look Into the Spiral]] from afar camera angle. Once the screamer occurs, she runs away (towards the cameraman) screaming. Another reaction involves a little girl being scared by this screamer, claiming the image to be her mom.

The animation disguises itself as a normal stock photo of a dining room; depicting an open window, table, chairs, paintings, and flowers. The viewer is then asked to find something wrong with it, however, there are no actual errors in the picture itself. After about 30 seconds the screen cuts to a grainy black and white closeup of an eyeless woman with a wide mouth putting her hands around the sides of her face with her pinky fingers raised, accompanied by audio of Mrs. Mae Kilgore (from the 1957 film ''[[wikipedia:From Hell It Came|From Hell It Came]]'', played by [[wikipedia:Linda Watkins|Linda Watkins]]) screaming, albeit muffled, distorted and echoing. The [[screamer]] face itself originates from gettyimages,<ref>https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/photo/young-woman-screaming-close-up-royalty-free-image/BD4381-001</ref> and was created by photographer 'Gandee Vasan' in 1998 as a stock photo inspired by ''The Scream'' painting by Edvard Munch. This stock image was also used (albeit heavily edited) for the cover of the 2001 film ''Maniacts.''

The animation has been reuploaded on multiple websites including [[YouTube]], where it has gained many views. The screamer has also been featured on ''[[America's Funniest Home Videos]]'' (used there as a substitute screamer in place of [[Regan MacNeil]] in [[The Maze]]) numerous times. Screamers of this kind became popular as they began to circulate on the Internet. A few more examples of this are [[What's wrong with this picture?]], [[Zoeken]], [[Forest-wmv]] and [[Basement Ghost]].

The screamer gained so much traction in its day, that it managed to land a spot in the New York Times on April 22, 2002. ==Trivia==
The screamer image made an appearance on a horror film titled '''Maniacts'''<ref>rottentomatoes.com/m/maniacts_2001</ref> (also referred to as '''Maniacs In Love''' in some territories), it was released in 2001. The plot of the movie revolves around two serial killers, Joe Spinelli (Jeff Fahey) and Beth Windsor (Kellie Waymire) who escape from an asylum and flee to the country in attempt to live a normal life. The film was released by Redrum Entertainment.

Although there are no screamers in the film itself, the cover of the movie features a heavily edited version of the infamous "What's Wrong" image. The woman has a crimson red tongue, metal prongs in her eyes, nose and mouth. The main characters, Joe and Beth, are also seen on her hands. The French release of the film shows a grainier image of the woman with no eyes, much like the infamous edit by JayBill McCarthy.

'''[YTP] Shrek Wants KFC For Christmas''' is a [[YouTube]] Poop which contains a screamer. It was uploaded December 24, 2021 by Eyeusemyself YTPs. It is a YTP of DreamWorks Shrek The Halls, released in 2007.

The description of this YTP reads as follows: “In This YouTube Poop, All Shrek Wants and Desires for Christmas is KFC. He Argues with Fiona about KFC and Complains about it, as he wasn't able to get it during Christmas Time.” A screamer occurs about one minute and thirty seconds into this video.

== The Video ==
A minute in, Shrek begins decorating the top of the swamp with Christmas decorations and ends up hanging down from some ropes and pans as Fiona walks out the door to see him there, only for Shrek to tell her “Why don’t you f**k off”. Fiona then asks if he’s decorating, to which he says he’s not and that he wants KFC. They argue for a moment before Donkey shows up, saying Shrek needs to “get rid of all this junk” and get more fancier decorations to which Shrek responds by saying “I’ll kill you right now!”, and eventually tells him to shoo. Donkey runs away, saying “You are mean to me!” before the screen abruptly cuts to black. The video then tricks the viewer into thinking that the video is over, with suggested videos popping up on screen. 2 minutes later, a yellow tinted image of Regan MacNeil pops up on screen with the same scream from the maze. After this, the video proceeds as normal.
